Jason Murphy
Lawyer
Jason is a graduate of the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and was called to the bar in 2003. He started his career in litigation at the Toronto law firm of McMillan LLP, then relocated to Collingwood in 2011 to practice at the law firm of Christie/Cummings, where he increasingly focused on family law. He opened Murphy Family Law in 2025.
Jason advises clients on resolving disputes about separation, divorce, parenting (formerly called “custody and access”), child support, spousal support and the division of property and debt.
Jason has appeared at all levels of court up to the Supreme Court of Canada, but he understands that most clients want to avoid court if at all possible. A happy client is one who has their file resolved quickly, fairly and at the lowest possible cost. Court is none of those things. Jason therefore offers an array of alternatives to litigation, including collaborative family law, mediation and private arbitration. He also advises clients on the creation of co-habitation and marriage contracts (also known as “pre-nups”), which set out in advance how couples will deal with a potential breakdown in their relationship.
Jason is a trained Collaborative Family Law practitioner and took his mediator training at Riverdale Mediation in Toronto with Hilary Linton and Elizabeth Hyde. In 2024, he was appointed by the Chief Justice to be a Dispute Resolution Officer of the Superior Court of Justice, tasked with assisting family law litigants in resolving cases without further court proceedings. He also serves on the Joint Community Liaison and Resources Committee for the Barrie Superior Court of Justice Family Court, working with judges, police, lawyers, court service workers and other service providers in the family law system to improve the court experience to separated parties.
Outside of the office, Jason is an avid hiker, canoer, writer, musician and dad. He has given his time and fund-raising efforts to a number of local causes including the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital Foundation, Hospice Georgian Triangle, My Friend’s House domestic violence shelter, and Trinity United Church’s Food Program.
